Before we left the US, a friend asked how do I dress to not look like a tourist.
There seems to no longer be a difference between us and them, in terms of dress. In European cities, everyone, whether traveler or local, dresses the same. Not long ago you could tell local women by the very pointy shoes. Men had man purses. And nobody wore shorts.
Nowadays, people wear t-shirts with Emirates, Abercrombie & Fitch, The Beatles, Holister and the like, with jeans or cargo sorts and shoes like Vans. All the women have cross body bags or backpacks. And everyone – no exceptions – is looking at a smart phone.
The only way I could look more local is to be smoking.
